Alternatives To Nuclear Power Plants
Nuclear power is the use of nuclear fission in order to generate heat and do useful work. This use of nuclear fission is usually sustained. Due to its nature, it has raised a few concerns. Getting nuclear power involves uranium mining and this can cause serious long-term damage to the local ecology. When the unrefined ore is brought up to the surface, the material that is non-Uranium is separated and put on the ground where emission of Radon gas becomes its mission. There is also the potential of nuclear waste which is radioactive in nature. The main waste concern is plutonium which has devastating effects. The reaction process may bring about a meltdown which may result in the explosion of radioactive material into the environment. Can you remember what happened in Japan? If not, this is what happened. These concerns can be mitigated if we use alternatives to nuclear power plants. The main function of a power plant is the production of energy and this means that there are other safer means to produce energy other than nuclear power plants.
The first alternative that I will talk about is solar power generation. It is known that there are two main ways to collect solar energy. The first one entails the conversion of solar heat to electricity through the use of gases. Solar furnaces use big collections of mirrors based on the ground to direct all incoming light towards a middle point where water is heated and begins boiling. This produces steam which powers turbine dynamos thus producing electric power. Another method of solar thermal power generation is direct air heating. Here, a glass greenhouse covering a large area of land absorbs sunlight to heat air. All heated air is channeled up past turbines by a central tower and the turbines power dynamos resulting in power. Both of these solar thermal methods have no negative implications for the environment.
The next one is wind power generation. Here, wind is used to spin rotors which turn turbines resulting in the creation of power. The generators that use wind in order to produce power can be placed either on land or in offshore locations. The sizes of the plants are not constant and are used in any area that is prone to winds. Again, this energy production method does not produce any waste. What you will need to produce a significant amount of energy is a large windy area like let’s say a desert.
Another alternative is the use of hydroelectric plants. As the name suggests, in this method, flowing water is used to turn turbines resulting in the production of electricity. Here, dams are used to manage the water flow. This helps in increasing the water pressure to usable levels for the generation of electricity. Again, this is a clean alternative.
Finally, a geothermal power plant is a good and safe alternative. In this technique, heated water that is deep in the earth’s crust is pumped to the surface and the steam emitted is used to power a turbine resulting in the creation of power. The cooled water returns to a second well in the earth.
